Outdoor Family Photo Session in Raleigh
Despite the snow in January, I got to meet this lovely family at Fred Fletcher Park for a lovely family outdoor photo session in Raleigh.
Fred Fletcher Park Features Great for Outdoor Photo Session
Fred Fletcher Park in downtown Raleigh has a public entrance on Clay Street. Parking lies next to the Garris Building and the Borden Building sits off to the right. On Sunday, when we had this photo session, both buildings were closed. Therefore we had no access to facilities if we needed them.
By the two buildings lie some winding sidewalks that offer nice neutral ground reflection for portrait photography to compensate for several of the darker greens of the trees that tower overhead. The trees and foliage looking west in the direction of the sun setting provided an openness and light foliage to keep our portraits light and airy. On this particular day the sun was softly filtered by a thin cloud making the golden hour quite beautiful for this outdoor family photo session in Raleigh.
The city keeps the park well landscaped even though it is completely open to visitors at any time. In the middle of the park you can find a stone amphitheatre and sidewalks that wind back toward a ball park.
As we walked through the park I saw several trees with buds hinting at the coming spring. I told myself I definitely need to return when the flowers blossom around this park. I can only imagine how pretty a family portrait session could be with lots of soft colors to fill the landscape of the photos.
How to Plan a Wardrobe for an Outdoor Family Photo Session
This lovely family came dressed in soft and neutral toned clothing with some navy for contrast. Because the park has lots of dark greens and hues of yellow already, the soft pink and light blues of the girls’ tops helps focus the photos on the family. Mom’s red hair made each photo pop and her cream colored top helped reflect light back onto the family. Notice they didn’t try to match. I like a variety of colors in a family’s wardrobe for portraits as long as it complements. The boots helped keep the kids’ feet dry as they played. You never know when you might have wet grass, mud, or even puddles that little feet might step it.
